Deadlines
How should a small business track deadlines?
By The REMNIVO team · Published · Updated
Track every deadline in one system with an owner, a lead time and automatic reminders. Calendar apps remind whoever set the event; a deadline system escalates to the right person before it's too late.
Calendars fail for business deadlines for a simple reason: they assume someone already knows the deadline exists. The dangerous deadlines are precisely the ones nobody has thought about for eleven months.
The three properties every tracked deadline needs
- A source record — the contract or asset it belongs to, so context survives staff changes
- An owner and ideally a backup — accountability beats collective amnesia
- Lead time — warning early enough to actually act, e.g. notice periods plus decision time
Making reminders actionable
A reminder saying 'Contract XYZ' is nearly useless. An effective alert states what happens next: 'Notice period started — serve notice by 14 March or pay another year.' The difference between data and instruction is where most systems fall down.
